Horse stance

GMB: "For us, horse stance is an effective exercise for building strong legs, improving your mobility, and even enhancing your willpower."
Bill: This is a fun, challenging isometric exercises that's sort of like a body squat that you hold for a while. [ID: squat]

Instructions

First time: Hold the Horse stance for 10 seconds

Steps:

  1. Place your hands on your knees and squat down; ensure that your knees go outward, not inward
  2. Work your way into a position where your thighs are parallel to the ground. If you struggle, continue practicing and remember to actively push your knees outward
  3. Pull your body forward, align your knees over your toes and raise your chest to get that straight-back posture

The video is long, but it's worth watching. The instructor is really good.

Details

My two cents:

  • Call me a goof ("goof!"), but this is a fun exercise to learn and to practice. Maybe it's the Kung Fu connection. (shrug)
  • This is a sort of an isometric squat, squat.htm
  • Squats can mean wear and tear on knees, and that a problem for some older folks. The Horse stance strengthens similar muscles as a squat without burning up your knees.
  • This isn't a perfect analogy, but it's pretty good. The Horse stance is to the squat as the plank is to the pushup.
  • I like Horse stance as a morning exercise.
